- Style, Engineering and Industrialization for ECOZEMA Disposable Compostable Cutlery

ECOZEMA disposable cutlery produced in Mater-Bi® was the first to have received the international “OK Compost” certification for biodegradability. They are a valid alternative to traditional plastics, with a focus on sustainability consistent with the Green Deal.

Client: ECOZEMA S.r.l.

Our Industrial Design Studio, always attentive to Environmental Sustainability, was chosen by ECOZEMA to design and develop a new line of compostable cutlery. Proud to be able to collaborate with one of the most advanced companies in terms of eco-sustainability, we have created a set of compostable disposable cutlery keeping the same performance and functionality as those in plastic.

ECOZEMA’s Vision is based on 5 fundamental principles:

  • The respect for our Planet
  • The reduction of the impact on Earth of the products
  • Recycling
  • Rethinking production activities from a sustainable perspective
  • Redesigning products considering the needs of the environment

Basing on these principles, we designed Mater-Bi® cutlery with the (almost revolutionary) idea of ”Producing starting from the end“, which is for designing and developing a product that is both durable and compostable, helping to preserve our Planet by reducing the Carbon footprint.

ECOZEMA cutlery, designed in the early 2010s, is still a product increasingly appreciated day after day, thanks to the widespread sensitivity to environmental issues.
The possibility of disposal in composting plants and the materials deriving for more than 50% from renewable sources make these products perfectly aligned with the Green Deal.

Aware of the importance of ensuring a suitable revenue for this type of production (thus making it financially sustainable in the long term), we have also focused our attention on the optimization of thickness, in order to reduce the weight of the cutlery keeping the same performance, with subsequent cost reduction.

The launch of the disposable compostable cutlery sets took place during the London Olympics in 2012: this forward-looking communication strategy allowed ECOZEMA to establish itself on a market that was less sensitive to these issues at the time, immediately gaining the leadership.

ECOZEMA has launched a network of partnerships selected by the sustainability of their production processes: this has led the cutlery designed and developed by us to be the first international product to receive the “OK Compost” Certification for biodegradability and compostability.
