We asked Eros Angelini, the Founder and Chief Designer of our Industrial Design Studio, to outline his goals for 2023: here is what he told us:
Eros, how do you feel about 2023?
The last 12 months have been characterised by big changes, some simply unthinkable until recently. The scenarios we all got used to moving in have literally gone crazy, and in addition digitisation (and two years of pandemic) has generated a different way of acting: today we are in the world of ‘Non-Things’, we hardly touch any object anymore, but see it on the display of our devices. Yet, we must continue to ‘do’, indeed we must become better and better at creating real objects that will be purchased by the very people who live in the world of ‘Non-Things’.
It is a challenge that seems very demanding: how do you think you can overcome it?
There is certainly a solution, and perhaps it will surprise you: it is Sustainability!
Yes, it was indeed difficult to expect this answer: would you like to tell us more?
Well, just think that designing sustainably means creating more competitive products! Reducing the use of raw materials, decreasing energy consumption, and optimising internal and external logistics compresses costs and production times, thus increasing the company’s profitability, almost in an ‘accountancy’ way. What’s more, there is also another aspect: today a product is perceived as being of greater value precisely because it is sustainable, and those who buy it feel that they are playing a part in safeguarding our planet!
How do you plan to achieve this in concrete terms?
Look, for several years now we have been gearing all the services we offer our customers towards sustainable design: we call it ‘Designing from the end’.
This year we want to take it a step further: we want to draw up and apply a ‘Sustainability Report Card’ to our projects, where we analyse every single side of the product from the point of view of sustainability, and assign a score.
Of course, in addition to the ‘grades’ in terms of sustainability, we will also assess the elements of profitability: in this way, we will be able to show (and quantify) how through sustainability the return on investment is increased.
Only one aspect is missing at this point: how do you plan to convey this value to your ‘Customers’ Customers’? After all, they are the ones who will decide to buy….
If we want, the answer is simple: with Marketing, a service that we have particularly strengthened for our clients in recent times, making it increasingly integrated and synergic with design services.
Through our Strategic Consulting and Operations Management activities, we intend to convey these values integrally to our customers’ markets, with dedicated and customised communication actions.
In this way, we can easily get in touch with the world of non-things!
